  • 2 August - King William II of England dies in a hunting accident in the New Forest; he is succeeded by Henry I of England.^[1]

  • 23 September - Archbishop of Canterbury Anselm returns from exile at the invitation of Henry I.^[2]
  • 11 November - Henry I marries Matilda of Scotland, daughter of King Malcolm III of Scotland.^[3]
  • Henry I issues the Charter of Liberties.

  • 20 July - Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy lands at Southampton to claim the English throne.^[2]
  • By the Treaty of Alton, Robert recognises his older brother Henry I as King of England.^[2]
